Basic Characteristics
Composition and Properties: It belongs to low-carbon structural steel. It does not pursue precise chemical composition, but focuses on ensuring mechanical properties (strength, toughness). With moderate carbon content, it possesses good strength, plasticity, weldability, and machinability.
Manufacturing Process: It is produced by hot rolling, resulting in a layer of blue iron oxide scale (rolled oxide scale) on the surface. The surface is relatively rough and may contain rolling marks. Dimensional tolerances are larger than those of cold-rolled plates.
Definition of "Thick Steel Plate": Generally refers to hot-rolled steel plates with a thickness of 4.5mm or more. Common thicknesses of SS400 range from 6mm to 200mm or even thicker.
No Special Corrosion Resistance: Similar to SPCC, SS400 is a bare material and will rust in humid environments, requiring coating (such as painting) for rust prevention.
Main Applications
(Based on its "Structural Strength" Characteristics) The core value of SS400 thick steel plates lies in their high structural strength, good comprehensive mechanical properties, and low cost, making them widely used in fields requiring load-bearing and stress-bearing capabilities.
a. Building and Steel Structures (Largest Application Area)
Factory/Warehouse Structures: Steel columns, steel beams, trusses, roof trusses, purlins.
High-Rise Buildings: As primary or secondary load-bearing structural components.
Bridges: Auxiliary structures of bridges, guardrails, bridge deck support plates (non-main load-bearing components).
Building Foundations: Embedded parts, anchor plates, support plates.
b. Heavy Machinery and Equipment Manufacturing
Construction Machinery: Excavator, crane, loader booms, chassis, frames, counterweights, guard plates.
Machine Tools: Punch press, injection molding machine, printing press body, base, frame.
Mining Machinery: Conveyor supports, crusher housings, hoppers.
Agricultural Machinery: Tractor frames, harvester frames.
c. Transportation
Trucks and Trailers: Frame longitudinal beams, cross beams, floor plates, side plates (usually using higher strength steel, but SS400 is also used in non-critical parts).
Ships: Internal hull structure, bulkheads, base plates under deck lining (main hull structure usually uses special ship steel, such as A/B/D grade).
Railway Vehicles: Side plates, floor plates, and some structural components of freight cars.
d. Infrastructure and Power
Power Transmission Towers: Structural angle steel and steel plates (cut from SS400 steel plates) for transmission towers.
Power Plant Equipment: Boiler steel frames, equipment platforms, support plates for walkway gratings.
Storage Tanks and Containers: Large storage tanks (requiring painting) for storing non-corrosive media such as water and oil; outer shells of containers with low pressure.
Wind Power Generation: Internal structural components and platforms of towers.
e. Other general structural components: Bases, brackets, supports, flanges, and reinforcing plates for various equipment.
Base plates (mold holders) for molds.
Steel structure stairs and platforms.
