Mechanical Properties: Martensitic 400 series stainless steels (such as 410 and 420) can achieve high strength and hardness through heat treatment (quenching and tempering), and have good wear resistance.
Oxidation and Sulfation Resistance: In some high-temperature oxidizing and sulfur-containing atmospheres, its performance is superior to 300 series stainless steels.
Thermal Conductivity: Superior to 300 series stainless steels, suitable for heat exchange applications.
Magnetic Properties: All are magnetic, which is required in some electronic or special separation applications.
Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking: Superior to austenitic stainless steels in some chloride environments.
Main Disadvantages:
Corrosion Resistance: Overall, its corrosion resistance (especially acid and pitting resistance) is generally lower than 304, and much lower than 316. This is a key factor to consider when choosing.
Formability and Weldability: Formability (especially deep drawing) and weldability are generally inferior to 300 series austenitic steels, which have better ductility and toughness.
Low-Temperature Toughness: Toughness is poor at low temperatures, making it unsuitable for ultra-low temperature environments.
