2205 stainless steel is a duplex stainless steel that combines the advantages of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels while overcoming some of their respective disadvantages.

Key Characteristics:
High Strength: Its yield strength is more than twice that of ordinary 304 or 316 austenitic stainless steel. This means that thinner wall thicknesses can be used for the same load-bearing requirements, resulting in weight reduction and cost reduction.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance: In chloride environments (such as seawater and brine), its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is far superior to 316L stainless steel.

It has good resistance to stress corrosion cracking, a common failure mode for austenitic stainless steels in chloride-containing environments.

Good Weldability: Although welding processes are more demanding than with ordinary stainless steel, it possesses good weldability, and the welded joint maintains excellent performance.

Good Toughness: Compared to pure ferritic stainless steel, it has better low-temperature toughness.

Chemical Composition (Typical Values):

Chromium (Cr): Approximately 22% - Provides basic corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.

Nickel (Ni): Approximately 5% - Stabilizes the austenitic phase and enhances corrosion resistance.

Molybdenum (Mo): Approximately 3% - Significantly improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion.

Nitrogen (N): Approximately 0.17% - A key element that significantly improves strength and stabilizes the austenitic phase while enhancing pitting resistance.

Common Grade Comparison:

UNS S32205/S31803: This is the most commonly used US grade.

Chinese Grade: 022Cr22Ni5Mo3N or 00Cr22Ni5Mo3N.

European Grade: 1.4462.
