Heavy Gauge 0.60mm Low Carbon Tinplate Sheet T5 Temper For Chemical Paint Pails

Industrial containers are built to a different strength budget than food cans. A four litre paint pail filled with two pack epoxy, or an eighteen litre drum of lubricant, is dropped onto concrete, stacked six high on a pallet and moved by forklift. The wall must resist denting and the chime must hold its shape under load. Standard food can gauge tinplate, capped at roughly 0.50mm, is structurally marginal for these duties. Heavy gauge 0.60mm electrolytic tinplate is purpose engineered for this segment.

The material pairs a 0.60mm low carbon aluminium killed substrate with T5 full hard temper. Yield strength sits in the 435 to 480 MPa band, giving the formed body the rigidity to resist ovalisation and the seam integrity to hold under hydrostatic pressure. A 2.8 g/m2 electrolytic tin coating on both faces provides corrosion protection for mildly aggressive contents and forms an excellent base for the internal lacquer systems used with solvent based paints, thinners and lubricants. Sheets are supplied flat and stress relieved so automated blanking and welding lines run without registration drift.

• Structural Gauge Beyond Food Cans: At 0.60mm the material extends well past the 0.50mm ceiling common in food can applications, delivering the wall stiffness needed for four litre and eighteen litre pails that must survive drop tests, stacking pressure and rough handling in industrial distribution.
• T5 Temper Strength: Full hard T5 temper gives a yield strength in the 435 to 480 MPa range and a hardness of HR30T 65 to 69, so the formed pail resists ovalisation when filled, palletised and stacked six high in a warehouse without deforming at the chime.
• Clean Low Carbon Substrate: Low carbon aluminium killed steel with controlled residuals welds cleanly on high speed seam welders and forms consistently at the tight radii of pail chimes and lug ears, keeping weld porosity and cracking rates low on automated lines.
• Corrosion Protection For Solvent Packs: A 2.8/2.8 g/m2 tin coating protects the steel from the mild acidity of alkyd and water based paints and from moisture ingress, while accepting internal lacquer systems required for solvent and lubricant contact.
• Dimensional Accuracy For Automated Lines: Thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.01mm combined with flat, stress relieved sheets ensures consistent feed and registration on automated blanking, rolling and seaming equipment, reducing jams and scrap on high volume pail lines.
• Flexible Sheet And Coil Supply: Available as cut sheets, scroll cut blanks or full coils, so pail manufacturers can choose between buying blanks ready for the welder or running their own decoiler and shear line without changing material specification.

The core applications are four litre and eighteen litre paint pails, chemical pails for adhesives and sealants, lubricant and motor oil containers, solvent and thinner drums, bitumen and roofing compound pails, and heavy duty food service containers such as edible oil tins. The material also suits industrial parts bins, ash and waste containers and heavy duty decorative tins where rigidity matters more than weight saving.

Because T5 temper welds reliably, pail producers running automatic body welders, chime formers and lug ear presses can process the material without changing line settings beyond thickness compensation. Sheets can be supplied cut to exact blank size to eliminate in-house shearing, or as coils for customers with their own decoiling and cut to length equipment. Trial lots of five metric tons are available for line qualification before container volume commitments.

Each coil is wrapped in anti-corrosion VCI film, interleaved with desiccant bags, then sheathed in kraft paper and finally enclosed by galvanised steel sheet with reinforced corner protectors. Coils are stacked eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall according to customer unloading equipment, strapped with PET bands at four points, and loaded into 20ft or 40ft containers on fumigated wooden skids. Sheet bundles are protected by edge boards and plastic strapping so that the surface finish reaches the destination port free of scratches, white rust and transit dents.

The mill operates under an ISO 9001 certified quality system. Every heat number is traceable and each shipment is accompanied by a mill test certificate covering chemical composition, tensile and yield strength, tin coating weight measured by coulometric stripping, and surface roughness. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV or Intertek can be arranged on request before container sealing, and a retained sample from each lot is archived for twelve months for future claim investigation. Any dimensional or coating non-conformity is settled by replacement or price adjustment within the contracted tolerance framework.
