Corrosion Resistance Ranking (from best to worst):

J3 > 201 (J1) > J4 > J2

J3, due to its high nickel and low copper content, exhibits the strongest resistance to pitting and uniform corrosion.

J2, with its low nickel and high copper content, may experience reduced corrosion resistance due to the potential formation of galvanic cells in corrosive media, especially in chloride-containing environments.

 

Formability (Deep Drawing Performance) Ranking (from best to worst):

J2 > 201 (J1) ≈ J3 > J4

The added copper (Cu) in J2 significantly improves the material's ductility and cold working properties, making it ideal for complex forming processes such as deep drawing and stretching.

J4, due to its high nitrogen content leading to high strength and work hardening, is the most difficult to form.

 

Strength/Hardness Ranking (from highest to lowest):

J4 > 201 (J1) ≈ J3 > J2

Nitrogen (N) in J4 is the most effective solid solution strengthening element, significantly improving both strength and hardness.

 

J2 has relatively lower strength. Weldability:

All 201 series stainless steels have poorer weldability than 304 stainless steel. The weld area is prone to corrosion resistance reduction due to chromium carbide precipitation.

The high nitrogen content of J4 may further worsen its weldability.

The weldability of J2 is also generally poor due to its uneven composition.
